Parents know that milk is great for their babies, which is why we give it to them, but is it possible to give too much milk?
Not only does milk help them grow big and strong, but it provides them with essential vitamins and nutrients for healthy growth and development. So is it possible to give your child too much of a good thing?
The answer is yes. After your child’s first birthday, whole cow’s milk replaces breast milk and/or formula as your child’s main source of nutrients.
Whole cow’s milk is preferred because it contains the best amount of vitamins, minerals and fats that your child needs to grow and develop.

The Proper Amount
To be healthy, most children should consume between 16 and 24 ounces of milk per day. If your child is consuming more than that, it could be detrimental to his or her health. First, if your child is drinking whole cow’s milk, they are consuming a lot of fats. While the fats in whole cow’s milk are healthy and beneficial in the right moderation, they can cause your child to gain excess weight.
Second, consuming a great deal of whole cow’s milk can make your child feel full. When they become full off of milk, they are less likely to eat other foods at meal time. Even though milk is healthy and their main source of nutrients, it is not their only source of nutrients. Your child does need to consume the vitamins and minerals that are provided through other foods in order to maintain a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle.
Milk does not contain any iron. When your child consumes too much milk and does not consume any other foods, they are not receiving iron. An iron deficiency, sometimes referred to as anemia, can be very dangerous. Iron deficiencies are known to make children feel tired and weak, and can even cause them to be lightheaded and faint.
Consuming too much milk is also known to make children constipated. Constipation can be very painful for young children, as it can make having a bowel movement extremely uncomfortable.
Allergies and Intolerance
If your child has a milk allergy or intolerance, they should not consume whole cow’s milk and should consume a milk that does not contain dairy, such as soy milk. Even if your child is drinking another type of milk, it is still possible for them to consume too much.
In order to prevent your child from consuming too much milk, it is best to keep them limited to a healthy dose of 16 to 24 ounces per day. Do not try to replace a cup of milk with a cup of water, exceeding 24 ounces of any liquid can still make your child feel full at meal time and still prevent him or her from receiving the correct vitamins and minerals.
If your child seems to be always thirsty, you need to consult your child’s doctor. Constant thirst can be a sign of another underlying problem, such as diabetes, and it is best to have your child’s doctor look into it.
So remember, if your child is consuming between 16 and 24 ounces of milk per day, they are receiving the correct amount of milk to ensure healthy growth and development. If your child’s consumption of milk exceeds 24 ounces per day, they are receiving too much milk.
Drinking too much milk can cause your child to become constipated, cause your child to suffer from an iron deficiency, can make your child full so they do not eat other healthy foods at mealtime and can provide your child with excess fat that they do not need.
